The primary objective of this course is to promote a safer and healthier work environment in dental healthcare settings. We delve deep into the guidelines set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), focusing on its relevance and application in dental healthcare. Throughout this course, participants will gain insights into potential workplace hazards that may exist in a dental office setting, such as exposure to harmful chemicals and infectious diseases, ergonomic risks, and the safe handling and disposal of sharp objects. Beyond identifying these hazards, the course provides practical strategies for mitigating risks and implementing effective safety measures. We will explore topics like personal protective equipment, infection control, waste management, and emergency preparedness. 


This course is intended for dental healthcare providers, including dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and office staff. No prior knowledge of OSHA regulations is required.


Learning Objectives:

  • Define OSHA and its mission

  • List the OSHA standards that apply to dental practices, interpret the importance of each standard. List real world examples of OSHA violations that have occurred in the United States within the last 5 years. Provide a list of OSHA responsibilities specific to employers and employees.

  • Define the Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) standard, identify BBP basic requirements, and discuss the modes of disease transmission most common to a dental office setting.

  • Define the Hazard Communication standard. List the standard’s basic requirements, interpret each requirement including successful implementation of engineering controls in a dental office setting.

  • Define the Ionizing Radiation standard. List the standard’s basic requirements, interpret each requirement including successful implementation of engineering controls in a dental office setting.

  • Define the Ergonomic Hazards & Prevention standard and Exit Routes standard. List the standard’s basic requirements, interpret each requirement including successful implementation of engineering controls in a dental office setting.

She has worked on various projects with the CDC Office of Oral Health, is an Editorial Review Board member for OSAP & Inside Dental Hygiene, & serves as a CDC Inspector for the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners.

Processing and service fees are non-refundable for any and all cancellations with no exceptions. Refunds will only be issued if requested 8 days or more prior to the event. No refunds will be given within 7 days of the event unless the event is canceled by CE Zoom, or unforeseen acts of God, in which we will try and reschedule the event prior to issuing a full refund, minus any processing fees. Please note, if this is a live-streamed event, you must have a good internet connection and refunds will not be issued due to poor connection or courses not counting for CE credit.
